On 24 August the Faculty of Law hosted the second edition of the Cambridge Doctoral Workshop in Legal Theory.  The Workshop was organised by three first year PhD students, John Adenitire, Ya Lan Chang and Raffael Fasel. The Cambridge Forum for Legal and Political Philosophy and Hart Publishing sponsored the event. The Workshop was attended by several postgraduate students from around the globe, including Canada, USA, Australia, Spain, Italy and Switzerland.

The morning session was opened by Professor John Tasioulas (KCL) who delivered a keynote lecture on ‘Just Global Health’.  He argued against the expansion of the content of the right to health in international human rights law and suggested that the scope of the right should primarily be identified by reference to obligations regarding health care services and public health measures.

Three successive panels were heard throughout the day.  The first on the philosophy of human rights; the second on constitutional theory; and the final one on general jurisprudence. Each panel was constituted of three presenters who had the opportunity to present pre-circulated papers for around 15 minutes each.  A lively debate, lasting for over an hour, ensued after each round of presentations.  In between the first and second panel, Bill Asquith, commissioning editor from Hart Publishing, offered the audience advice on the prospects of publishing a PhD thesis as a monograph.
